Great Camping spots to checkout traveling along the Grt Northern Hwy to and from Broome in September 2016
Approx 387kms, 4 1/2 hrs from Perth, Ninghan Station just 6km off the the Grt Northern Hwy. The sign lists all the prices here. It has toilets and showers next to the Homestead as well as some isolated bush camp sites further on to visit like a huge rock called Wardaga and Mt singleton that has great views.
Nalbarra Station (a working sheep station) Approx 522 kms, 6 1/2 hrs from Perth and 17kms West off the Grt Norther Hwy (sign Posted). With a warm welcome John and Pam will direct you to some good camping spots or some old fashion Shearers quarters. Our camping spot only cost $20 for the night with plenty of space to find your own quite space but within easy reach of the shower and toilet.
Bilyuin Pool camp site on the Murchinson River is sign posted with the Ashburton Downs Road 74kms North of Meekatharra. Travel approx 16kms West on a gravel road and then turn left just left after the river crossing. This Camping spot is a favourite of mine because large pools and bird life have always been present. It is very picturesque, has plenty of shade, and lots of space to find your own camping spot on the banks of the Murchinson river. There are no facilities here and no one takes responsibility for this charming area, so please take in your own firewood and take your rubbish out with you when leaving!
Gascoyne River South (Middle Branch) 181kms North of Meekatharra. It is clearly sign posted as an official rest area on the Grt Northern Hwy has no facilities but it has easy to find campsites to the west on the North side of the bridge so you to bunker down quickly if you are becoming weary from driving too far in one day.
The Albert Tognolini Lookout in Munjina Gorge has a spectacular view of the Gorge and has camp sites available. It is 177kms north west of Newman, 17kms south of Auski Road. It is not far from the entrance to the spectacular Karijini NP to the south. It is worth noting that north of the Auski Roadhouse whether heading to Broome or Perth many camping spots can be found on either side of the Grt Northern Hwy for a quick overnight stop to refresh oneself, especially if wanting a view of the majestic Hammersley Ranges before the sunsets. Bea Bea Rest Area is one of those camping spots 44 Kms north of Auski Roadhouse on the western side of the Highway.
DeGrey River Rest Area is 81 kms east of Port Hedland and is on the Broome side of the river. Access is via a good gravel road on the southern side of the bridge. A picturesque spot, very popular with most people traveling to Broome, wanting a quick overnight stay. It usually consists of large pools of water in a very wide, sandy river bed in the dry season.
