Kimberley Karavan Overview & Technology

The Kimberley Karavan Model is for the couple who want to go everywhere in Australia but still have the comfort of an inside toilet and shower. The folding Composite Fiberglass top and push-out bed means there is no canvas and the inside cooking facilities maximizes comfort in bad weather. The model is compact and light enough to tow behind a large or the now popular medium-size 4WD. It has a Queen size bed and ample storage space for long term travel.

We took our proven Kimberley Kamper chassis and independent suspension and built an improved design from the ground up without compromise to the concept. We included some proven diesel technology, used in the marine industry, to replace the need for LPG inside the unit. We have significantly increased the sourcing of marine grade materials and components.

The Kimberley Karavan has more than TWICE the number of Signature Features of any other off road Caravan.
It is designed to go off road anywhere and everywhere. It is completely self sufficient with diesel powered cooking and hot water system.
It has a monocoque composite shell & unfolds from a cocoon only 5m long, 1.85m wide, 2.1m high - there is no canvas in it’s design

Powerglide™

The new Kimberley Karavan features a unique monocoque composite shell which opens up in minutes with a push of a button.

Diesel-Cooker-with-3-billys

Diesel Cooktop

The diesel cooktop uses the same proven technology that Webasto have used for years. The diesel is atomized over a Platinum/ Stainless Steel mantle which initially glows and ignites the diesel. Once started, the system is virtually self sustaining with the only power needed being for the fan system.

Hot-Water-system-with-heate

Visi-flow™

Adequate fresh water capacity is essential for extended remote camping, and the Kimberley Karavan has a multi-source fresh water supply system called Visi-flow™.

A dual tank system allows you to access different water quality so that you can preserve the “pure” drinking water for every day drinking water or for your tea.

In addition there is a third water inlet that is used for mains pressure water or for pumping from a nearby water source with up to 3-4m of head. A simple valve system switches to the remote water source and bypasses the on-board tanks.

The hot water systems operate using a diesel heater. The heater operates a simple circuit through a stainless steel heat exchanger that heats the water passing through the heat exchanger. As a result, the water being heated passes independently of the heater and so multiple water sources can be used.

toilet

Vacuum Toilet System

Based on vacuum technology, Kimberley Karavans have as standard equipment a lightweight toilet with a porcelain china bowl.
When the toilet is flushed by pushing down the foot pedal the vacuum in the system is released. The bowl is instantly cleared and the waste is moved through the piping at 2 metres per second to the remote cassette.

Battery System

Kimberley Karavan battery power is provided by up to 350 amp-hours of absorbed glass mat batteries (we use Exide – a quality brand). The advantages of AGM batteries are that they require no maintenance, withstand shock and vibration better than any standard
battery, are sealed against hydrogen leakage and spilling even if they are broken, and can survive most freezes.

AGM batteries are "recombinant" - which means the oxygen and hydrogen recombine inside the battery. The recombining is typically more than 99% efficient, so almost no water is lost.

Since the internal resistance is extremely low, there is almost no heating of the battery even under heavy charge and discharge currents.

breaks

Hydraulic Disk Brakes

Simple, effective and a proven performer on thousands of trailers, this brake system has been the braking package of choice for most trailer owners for decades. The vast majority of trailer hydraulic ‘over-ride’ brake systems are package with drum brakes; however at Kimberley Kampers we use disc brakes.

Because brakes work by friction there is wear of shoes and drums. Most wear is directed at the shoes. These are lined with a high friction material to reduce their size. The drums and shoes must be heat resistant and dissipate the heat generated effectively. Generally brake effectiveness deteriorates as the brake mechanism heats up.

Disc Brakes use pads which clamp on either side of a ventilated disk (rotor). Disk brakes are usually better at dissipating heat, are self cleaning and lighter. Disk brakes are much lower in maintenance in dusty conditions and when traversing water crossings.
